Old Bridge Observer Article July 23, 2005 Cars, bikes to converge at WSHS“Music education to benefit from big car and motorcycle show at WSHS” By Claire O’Brien Donna Wheeler, director of the Motorcycle/Car contest for Woodbridge Senior High School marching band, is excited about the event planned for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday, July 30, at the high school on Old Bridge Road.
In the motorcycle division two brands that will be exhibited are Harley Davidson and Indians. “Indians?” I ask. “They’re old and highly sought after,” says Wheeler. “They’re not made any more,” she explains. Within these makes there are different styles. These include speed bikes, low riders and choppers “where the frame is chopped up to express personal style.” Some of the car makes that will be exhibited are Corvettes and BMWs. In a different category there will be Chevys, Fords and other makes that have been customized into cruisers, antiques and hot rods. Cars representative of the 1920 to the 1070s will be on display. “The reason we need to do this is that we have an over $200,000 budget for the band. The parents and the boosters pay it all. It is funded totally by the band boosters,” she says. This is the first year for the motorcycle/car show, and Wheeler is getting help from several sources. One is the Prophecy Motorcycle Club. “Darryl Brock, a member of their club. He is the co-director with me,” she explains, adding, “Not all bikers are the bad crowd. These riders are professionals, just like everyone else.” The other two people helping her are Ranelle Nadeau. “She’s the chairwoman for the event,” and “Jimmy Wylke, he’s handling the grounds,” says Wheeler. Aside from the money, there is another consideration. “We want to be community minded to maintain a high profile with the community,” she states. The WSHS band is a force to be reckoned with. “In 2003-2004 we were undefeated in the Mid Atlantic Championships. With the United States Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) our drum line is undefeated. We also played at the Orange Bowl in 2004. In 2005 we were invited to participate in the Disney Honor Program at Orlando. We need money for our fund,” she concludes. “We already have some sponsors,” she says. These include, Coleman Power Sports, Shirt Art, Radio Station 100.3 (Big Oldies), Famous Dave’s BBQ, America’s Choice and Confidence Reality, Statements Hair Salon and Spa, Coke Cola, Potomac News, East Coast Billiards and Comcast. The Salvation Army is donating a large freezer, and Team Sports and Awards of Fredericksburg is donating all 25 trophies for 12 different categories. “One of the categories is the Viking Choice. This is the crowd’s favorite,” explains Wheeler. “We’ll have two live bands, Mojo is a local cover band. The other is a hip-hop group called Harlem X that promotes education and nonviolence. They’re anti drug,” says Wheeler. “All of this will benefit the WSHS band and choir students. Students get all the benefit. It’s for the music education of the students,” says Wheeler. Some of the dignitaries who have said that they’ll attend include Grant Lattin, who represents Occoquan District on Prince William County School Board, and Sean T. Connaughton, at-large member and chairman of Prince William Board of County Supervisors. The motorcycle groups that are coming from two or three states away as well as locally are “Rolling Thunder, the Leather Necks, Prince William County Police and Buffalo Soldiers. And there is going to be a blessing of the motorcycles by a Christian Motorcycle club,” says Wheeler. “There’ll be a photographer there to take pictures. And the “540 Boys of Fredericksburg” will put on a stunt show,” she says. “We’d like to see this become an annual event. It’s going to be a big family day. Come look at the over the top bikes and cars. I hope the community responds and has a fun day while supporting the band,” says Wheeler. The spectator fee is $5, and children under 11 can attend free.
